I get my flu shot in October. Why? The flu shot I get my flu shot in October. Why? The flu shot wanes somewhere between 9–15% around every 28 days. So, if I wait until the end of October, I have a higher level of immunity going into peak flu season, which is between December and January. But flu season can extend into May. And another thing—did you know that you can get the flu shot and COVID-19 shot at the same time? You only need one visit to your doc or pharmacy, which makes it so much easier on everyone. And even better, you only have to get one bribe item for your kid…if you do that. I’m a sucker. They always squeeze something out of me. Whatever. It's worth it to make sure we aren’t home sick all season! Do what you gotta do to stay healthy. How do you bribe your kids to cooperate and roll up their sleeves? This is an important answer…we all need to know. If Trump wins, he says he’s not going to fund schools that have vaccine mandates to protect students. Just as concerning, there’s speculation that Trump may appoint RF Kennedy Jr (who is notoriously anti-vaccine) as Secretary of HHS. With these two quashing vaccine initiatives that protect public health, we will experience widespread infectious disease and death. I’ve dedicated my life to making sure people stay healthy and alive. It hurts my heart to think about people suffering through terrible diseases, being hospitalized, or worse—especially when we have the tools to keep them from ever getting sick in the first place. Are we going to undo public health initiatives that protect the health of our citizens? Are we okay with letting vaccine-preventable diseases run rampant through our communities? I’m not. “A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down. “A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.” A classic! The line from Mary Poppins may not mean what you think it means. The line came from a conversation between the songwriter and his 5-year-old son who had just gotten the polio vaccine at school. The oral polio vaccine was given on a sugar cube and handed to each child to eat. His son, who was afraid of vaccines, was excited about the cube of sugar he had that day. Long story short, the songwriter played with this idea, and “A Spoonful of Sugar” was born. The oral polio vaccine replaced the injectable version in the early 60s. This vaccine helped to eradicate polio in the U.S. in 1979. Between the injectable vaccine and the oral vaccine, polio was eradicated from the U.S. within 25 years. Such a short time! Sidebar— I worked as an intern in a lab in grad school that focused on trying to create a vaccine cased in a gummy bear. It didn’t work, and I don’t know where they are with that, but how great would gummy bear vaccines be? Well, that’s why the oral polio vaccine is so cool! Unfortunately, we no longer use this vaccine in the U.S., but it’s still used in other parts of the world. What are some other creative ideas for vaccines that don’t involve needles?
